Description of the Raton Basin-Sierra Grande Uplift Province GIS Project
A geographic information system (GIS) focusing on southeastern Colorado and northwestern New Mexico was developed as a visual-analysis tool for the U.S. Geological Survey's National Assessment of Oil and Gas Project encompassing the Raton Basin-Sierra Grande Uplift Province.
The Spatial data that formed the basis of the Raton Basin-Sierra Grande Uplift Province GIS is contained on this CD-ROM in the Spatial/Shape folder. Data focuses on the extent of the Raton Basin-Sierra Grande Uplift Province and details its petroleum systems and related geological data, as well as infrastructure features and ownership data within the area. Several data formats are provided as noted by the subfolders Shape and Export within the SPATIAL folder.
DISPLAY OPTIONS
There are several display options available to view spatial data contained on this CD-ROM:
ArcMap
A customized ArcMap project has been included (DDS69N/SPATIAL/prov41.mxd) to facilitate the display of the data. This project is included on the CD-ROM under the assumption that many viewers will have access to ArcMap software. While not necessary to view the data, it is expected that the use of this project will lend more functionality to the data.
The ArcMap project utilizes relative path names, which is an option when saving the file. To open the project, start ArcMap and navigate to the file location on this CD-ROM (SPATIAL/prov41.mxd).
ArcReader
If ArcMap software is not available, the ArcMap project has been converted to an ArcReader project (SPATIAL/prov41.pmf). ArcReader is free software provided by ESRI. The ArcReader project maintains most of the functionality present in the ArcMap project. To open the ArcReader project, download the ArcReader software from ESRI, start ArcReader, and navigate to the ArcReader .pmf file on this CD-ROM. This freeware can be downloaded for Windows from the following link: http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcreader/download.html
Other
The spatial data are also provided in the ESRI Shapefile format (SPATIAL/Shape folder) or as ArcInfo 8.3 Export files (see SPATIAL/Export folder), should the user need to view the data in ArcInfo or a non-ESRI application.
BASE CARTOGRAPHIC DATA
The majority of the base cartographic layers used in the Raton Basin-Sierra Grande GIS project were obtained from the U.S. Department of the Interior National Atlas web site (http://www.nationalatlas.gov). Metadata were not created for the National Atlas layers used in this GIS project. Instead, links to the original datasets are included in the Metadata section.
METADATA
Metadata for the spatial files provided on this CD-ROM are contained in the SPATIAL/Doc folder. These files were created by using ESRIÆs ArcCatalog and a text editor. All metadata are provided in HTML format (best viewed in Internet Explorer 5.5 or later) and in XML format in the SPATIAL/Shape folder. The XML metadata files are embedded with the ESRI shapefiles and are intended for viewing in ESRIÆs ArcCatalog software.
The majority of the spatial data provided on this CD-ROM was acquired from the USGS Central Energy Resources TeamÆs data library or the National Atlas of the United States (http://www.nationalatlas.gov). Spatial data specific to the Raton Basin-Sierra Grande Uplift Province Assessment were created as a result of the study. All spatial data contained on this CD-ROM are in a geographic NAD83 projection unless otherwise noted.
INTERACTIVE MAPS
The U.S. Geological Survey Central Energy Team has developed an Internet Map Application to deliver data to the public. Various assessment results can be viewed and (or) downloaded from the internet web site. An interactive map is also available for viewing and displaying data. This can be used as an alternative to the GIS data and projects provided on this CD-ROM. To access the Raton Basin-Sierra Grande Uplift Province interactive map, follow the link below:
